Installation
Installation has been going all week!
Installation has been going all week!
Debra has fired two gas kilns worth of work this past week, which resulted in 93 pieces.
Given the scale of the project and its main concept, Debra called on her fellow artists as well as students and children to join her in a “clay marathon” at Mudflat Studio in Somerville, MA. The result: a huge variety of quills in pattern, texture, and clay composition. This expressed the multiplicity and community central to the project, specifically the interaction of individual energies and their effect on the group.
The piece will include 700+ components, suspended by filaments, that will float underneath the skylights running down the center of our studio. Each piece will have a multitude of quills extending from its center; she will need an estimated 25,000 quills. How is she going to do this?
We are pleased to announce the start of exhibitions and installations, to be held in our studio, named the Plinth Series . We hope this ongoing program will serve as a base or platform to further explore the intersection and/or interaction of architecture, art, and design. The scale of our studio, the various lighting conditions, and its location along what is known as the “bike path” present both opportunities and challenges.
Debra Fleury, a designer and sculptor living in the Boston area, will kick off our inaugural installation—to be celebrated on May 11th. Her finely crafted work, that utilizes various materials from porcelain to glass, has been shown across the country to much praise, including “Beyond the Brickyard” at the Archie Bray Foundation.
