Hillside Haven

Coastal, MA  USA

Scope: 4,060 sf; single-family private residence

Client: Withheld

The project, located on a slopping three-acre site, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s beaches. The clients’ desire: a home that was elegant but relaxed, a place for family gatherings. The modest structure is clad in weathered cedar—a vernacular material seen commonly in the region, historically on fishing shacks, that belies the interior’s sophistication. The rich palette of interior materials—Carrara marble, walnut, brass, and oak—are timeless; their use is clean, simple, and well-detailed, reinforcing the house’s spare aesthetic.

Materials: Cedar; oak; walnut; unlacquered brass; Carrara marble; concrete
