Client: University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Scope: Three stories; classrooms; faculty offices; meeting rooms
The university’s Dartmouth campus is defined by the brutalist buildings of Paul Rudolph. Charlton College of Business is the first structure to be added there since Rudolph designed the campus architecture in the 1970s. Our design places an orthogonal concrete clad slab over a concrete base. The building appears as a blocklike cantilevered bar—a counterweight to Rudolph’s sculpturally active concrete facades. The scale of the college is small in comparison to the massive and connected volumes of the original structures. We sited the college so that it would help frame—with an existing library—a new south-facing courtyard.
Materials: Pre-cast concrete panels; cast in-place concrete; steel; glass.
